Andrea's Tweet

I think everyone in our class has noticed how much Andrea is Tweeting -- wow!

Here is one of her recent Tweets based on the reading from Zeitoun that we did this past weekend:

Zeitoun and Nasser had to eat only the crackers and cheese as they were muslim and couldn't eat pork. What a cruelty of these guards..!

I was also curious about the consistent cruelty that the guards displayed toward the prisoners in the book, and to Zeitoun specifically. The cruelty seems to reflect the attitude of the guards more than a necessary punishment for the prisoners. After all, Zeitoun was innocent of everything except evacuating. There is a reason for Constitutional rights to a lawyer, a phone call, and to see a judge. Zeitoun got none of these things very fast, and in the meantime, he suffered one indignity after another while he was waiting for someone to pay attention to him. Besides the horrible food he was served, he was also strip-searched, probed, humiliated, and tortured - if you consider sleeping outdoors on greasy concrete a form of torture.
