Class Agenda 11-12

1. Go over the Superquiz. (10 minutes)

2. Quiz. Quote Sandwich: Zietoun. (15 minutes)

3. What are we Tweeting about Zeitoun? Join the conversation. Favorite and/or Retweet one Tweet from a classmate that you found interesting. (5-7 minutes)

4. Spread the word. After reading the conversation on Twitter, copy and paste your favorite Tweet from a classmate into a new blog post. Then, in your blog, explain to one of your readers why you posted the Tweet and why you think it's interesting. The blog can be 3-5 sentences - just be sure to add a line or two that explains what you're doing, and be sure that your reader can separate your own writing from the Tweet. Also, be sure to put down the username of the classmate you Tweeted. Maybe your reader would like to follow? (15 minutes)

5. As a class, let's zero in on a couple key passages from Zeitoun as we discuss the reading from the weekend. Then, return to a passage you find important. (15-20 minutes)

6. With a partner, practice some critical thinking:

a) Why do you think these passages are so important? What is so significant about them? What is the main idea in or behind the passage? That is, does the passage direct us to think about issues that are larger than just what happened to Zeitoun? What are they? Write your answers down in your notes. (7-10 minutes)

b) Try to come up with links or connections between the passages you both chose and the experience of Hurricane Katrina. How do the passages you found interesting tell us something about climate change storms, or climate change, as well? Write your answers down in your notes. (7-10 minutes)

7. Adding other voices to critical discussions: let's go over the templates from They Say I Say on pages 72-74. Then, let's use one or some of these templates to collection some information about Zeitoun.
