Board Notes (Zeitoun, Assignment One, etc)

Passages we looked at in class (thanks to Naomi and Jean Li).

Notes on critical thinking, and how to combine critical thinking with Zeitoun's personality.

Notes on paraphrase and summary -- one is longer than another...different techniques for different writing situations.
Notes on the topic sentence...and at the top, direct quotations...Notice that after the topic sentence comes all the information you'll need for the Mayor Bloomberg essay assignment...each dash (-) represents another sentence or two that relates your ideas to your reader.
A thesis template given to us by Dennis...note that these statements are more than one sentence, and each sentence explains a different aspect of the idea. Dennis states the reason the city isn't prepared, briefly explains why, and then explains the scientific reason behind it all. Note that he could go even further by adding another reason, giving more scientific information, or suggesting how the city could prepare itself better. He will expand on all these ideas in his essay.
As you read, or go back to the reading, you'll have to summarize the mains from the Global Warming chapters and the NYTimes article. What should you write down? Here's some of our notes about summaries...find a conflict, explain the different sides, and get the five W's and one H. Your reader will need to know the basics of the piece (author, date, title) as well as the main ideas (use summary and paraphrase).
